Immigration, a General Statement Tanner: When you visit my web site, either go to the page devoted to "Security" or "News" and then click on the hyperlink associated with "Border and Immigration Reform." My policy positions concur with the recommendations found in this article, which suggest we focus on: 1) Secure borders; 2) No Amnesty; 3) An efficient temporary worker program; and 4) Strict employer enforcement. In other words, if you're here illegally you have two options from my perspective. You can either voluntarily repatriate to your country of origin, or forfeit any shot at citizenship if you're deported. Unless we want anarchy in the streets, the legitimacy of American government depends upon observing the rule of law. In this regard, I favor the House immigration bill, which decouples reform initiatives from securing the border and enforcing existing immigration law. The national debate over immigration policy is healthy, and hopefully we will soon craft legislative reforms that provide "win-win" outcomes for all stakeholders (i.e. nations who desire trade, employers who need affordable labor, citizens who shouldn't have to subsidize illegal social services, and immigrants who risk it all to come here only to be exploited by employers as part of the under-ground economy). So, when it comes to immigration policy, my position is that we enforce the laws as they exist. If laws no longer accommodate the demands of culture or the national economy, we amend the laws to reflect the will of the people. A social contract exists between American government, its citizens, and legal immigrants. We obey the government's laws and in exchange they protect our rights. Said differently, the American dream is available to anyone who wants to play by the rules. In summary, only legal immigration mitigates risks to national security, while providing for citizen rights. America can only remain a "land of opportunity" for everyone by following the rule of law.
